As coordinators and members of Neighbourhood Watch, or those within our community in our later years, we have been informed of some useful information that could help you or your neighbours stay healthy and well.
Dehydration in Older People Awareness Week aims to promote awareness amongst older people and their carers that by drinking more fluids, older people can improve their quality of life.
If you have elderly friends or relatives it is important to check that they drink at least six to eight half pint drinks per day and even more when the weather is hot.
Tap water is one of the best things they can drink - as it’s cheap and readily available - but any fluid, (apart from alcohol or very strong caffeinated drinks such as espresso coffee, which dehydrate) count towards the eight.
It's easy to take action in promoting drinking. There are simple ways to help people increase their fluid intake and therefore improve their health and quality of life such as:
- drinking a full glass of water when taking meditation
- always having a drink with a meal, not just a cup of tea afterwards
