Look at your home through the eyes of a Burglar, if you can get into your home without keys, then so can a burglar! A lot of burglaries can be prevented, as most are committed by opportunist thieves. In two burglaries out of ten, the thief does not have to force his way in because a door or window has been left open or unlocked. Burglars like easy opportunities!

Burglars don’t like locked windows because breaking glass attracts attention! Going out, relaxing in the back garden, or having a barbecue? Always close and lock the external doors and windows – even if you are out for a short time. If any of your external doors are unlocked and you move away from that room, always lock the door before leaving, as an opportunist thief may walk in and you may not be aware that they have done so. Try to get into the habit of double-checking window and door locks when you are going to bed too.

Burglars don’t like security deadlocks on doors because they cannot open them even from the inside and have to get out through a window!Be careful with keys. Make sure your family knows how to get out in case of fire, but be careful not to leave keys, including spares, on view, or near the door, or where they could be reached from outside, and try not to leave spare keys in a garage or under a flowerpot – the first place a burglar will look!

Have burglar-proof fences and walls. Fences at the back of your house may add security. But walls and solid fencing can hide a burglar’s movements. Avoid this by using chain-link fencing you can see through, or use garden trellis or prickly shrubs against your walls or fencing.

Keep wheelie-bins away from your house. Always put your wheelie-bins away after the refuse collector has emptied them. Never position them outside a door or under a window, as they can be used as a climbing aid, or to take stolen goods away, and some have been used to start fires, which has resulted in damage to property and even loss of life.

Simple precautions like these do work, so check the security of your home against

the suggestions in the attachment to this message, and strengthen the weak spots as

soon as possible. A small outlay will, in many cases, make your home much more secure – and buy peace of mind into the bargain.

Where could an intruder get into your property?

Where could an intruder operate unseen?

Where are the weak points – door, windows, shed, garage, garden?

Could property easily be removed from your home, shed, garage, garden?

Could items stolen from your property be identified?
