This message is being sent on behalf of the Harborough District Community Safety Partnership.
The Harborough District Community Safety Partnership is running a District wide hate awareness and anti-social behaviour campaign week from 18th- 24th June. The partnership, which consists of agencies such as Harborough District Council, Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire Police and Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service alongside other local community groups, is keen to use the campaign as a celebration of all the excitement that 2012 is bringing. The Queens Jubilee, Euro 2012 and then a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the Olympics & Paralympics first hand will bring people from across the world together to share in positive aspects of each individual country. The celebrations will cross generations, cultures, physical abilities, races and faiths.
The Harborough District campaign is called – ‘Our Pledge: Embracing Difference’ and one of the main aims of the week will be to try to get people within the District to sign up to the pledge. The pledge being:
‘I will value my own difference and celebrate the differences of others to help everyone feel that Harborough District is a safe and happy place to be.’
We’re promoting this pledge as there are, unfortunately, people within our District who see ‘difference’ as negative and think that it is acceptable to abuse and judge people on the grounds of their perceived difference. They see all members of other communities as the same and don’t take the time to learn about and understand what makes people different. Sadly reports have been made from people within our District who have been called names because they have a different coloured skin, people who have been mocked because they have a disability and people who have been victimised because of their race or sexuality.
Please help us use this opportunity to celebrate all that is good and unique about each and every one of us – sign up to Our Pledge: Embracing Difference and help make our District a great place to be for everyone.
You can sign up online at www.harborough.gov.uk or in person. From Monday 18th June there will be forms at Harborough District Council, the library and museum.
